John Egenes memoir ‘Man & Horse’ sells in US to Vintage in major deal

John Egenes’ memoir, MAN & HORSE: The Long Journey Across America, has sold to Todd Portnowitz at Knopf at auction in a major deal brokered by David Forrer at Inkwell on behalf of Rebecca Slater at a4 Literary.

MAN & HORSE tells the remarkable true story of the author’s 7-month, 4,000-mile journey across America in 1974 with his Quarter Horse, Gizmo.

Part travelogue, part journey of self-discovery, part reckoning with a country and a culture refashioned by technology, at it’s heart the book is a story of the deep bond between man and animal.

Like John and Gizmo, MAN & HORSE has undergone a remarkable journey. After being self-published in 2017, the book was picked up for a surprise cameo in the Barbie movie and endorsed by Ryan Gosling.

Having already sold 25k copies and captured the hearts of readers worldwide, MAN & HORSE will be re-released in Summer 2027 under the Vintage Originals imprint in North America.
